Custom Paintings under the Christmas Tree

This year I decided to give custom paintings to my 8 year old nieces for their Christmas gift to hang in their brand new bedroom. I thought it would be fun to ask them what they wanted to see in their paintings & I'm so glad I did! Their requests were creative & quite specific - I like that in a client (especially a young one!).

One chose an underwater scene at the bottom of the deep blue ocean including a dolphin, coral, star fish & lots of colourful fish.

The other chose a scene in a grassy field under a cloud free sky, including a tree with an owl, white bunnies, colourful flowers & butterflies.

I was happy to see the excitement on their faces when opening the paintings! I think that they will be a nice addition to their new room - especially considering they chose the theme for their painting.

Ever thought of ordering a custom painting from tiny brushstrokes? For a gift or for yourself? In this post, I'll outline the easy process & answer a couple common questions.

It all starts with an idea & in most cases an email! Either you would like to order a painting as a gift for someone (ie: to welcome a new baby) or you would like to get a painting done for yourself (ie: to add to your baby's nursery decor). In either case, I can work with your ideas or provide you with an idea or 2 to choose from and provide sketches of the idea if preferred. I mostly focus on artwork for children - but am open to other requests as well!!

Q: What are your canvas sizes?

A: The standard canvas sizes I offer are:

8" x 8" for $50 + shipping

10" x 10" for $70 + shipping

12" x 12" for $90 + shipping

I can work with many canvas sizes and will quote upon request. The above canvas are 1.5" thick and ready to hang. Shipping rates range from $5. to $20. depending on size and distance.
Pick up & delivery options are available - this can be discussed during our initial communication.

Q: How long does a custom order take?

A: My normal timeline for a custom painting is 2 weeks. If you have a deadline, please let me know and I will work my best to meet it. If production times are slower (ie: I'm busier!) I will advise you during our initial communication.

Q: I want to get my friend a custom painting for her new baby but not sure what she would like - do you offer gift certificates?

A: Yes, of course! Gift certificates are a great way to give the gift of custom artwork. To purchase a gift certificate, email wendy@tinybrushstrokes.ca or {update coming soon} visit my shop & etsy shop to purchase. Choose the size of canvas you like & the certificate can even be mailed directly to the recipient if you like with a message from you included. The recipient will then email tiny brushstrokes to place their order at their convenience & choose whatever design they wish! When completed, the painting will be shipped directly to them.

Q: What methods of payment do you accept?

A: I accept cash, Visa, Mastercard & Paypal. Paypal can be used through my shop & etsy shop & I can process Visa/MC payments directly.

** when the custom order is complete, I can email you a picture of it prior to shipping if you like.

a glimpse of my painting process

I thought it would be interesting to post a little about my process when I paint custom orders & show it through pics! Luckily I had this idea way back & documented a little while creating a custom painting for baby Jacob back in September.

With this order I was inspired by a photo of Jacob's crib bedding which included super cute jungle animals. More of the same animals as my last post are featured in this one too - some popular ones I suppose!

So in my sketchbook, I sketched a couple ideas for the layout and which animals I would choose. Then once I was satisfied with that, I drew the painting out on the 12" x 12" canvas. Yes, I draw the painting out before I actually paint. Some may not 'approve' of this process - but hey, its the way I work - and it gives me a clear sense when I begin painting. However, in my art school days, I did experiment with different styles of paintings that were never drawn out - I just went for it! Thinking of that makes me want to revist the stuffed trunk & collection of artworks from those days packed away in the basement!

The next step, I begin painting - normally I work from the background to the foreground. The main colours of the painting & inside each circular frame were again, inspired by the bedding.

Now, onto the animals! I use a wonderful reference book for all the animals I draw & paint - to help me with the details & colouring of each animal. Of course, its produced by National Geographic and has been an amazing visual resource for me! I'd much prefer to look in a book that refer to the internet most times.

And so, I bring each pencil animal to 'life' with colour - Sounds cheezy but its true! So here is the finished product & some details shots...

So there is a little glimpse into my process - I hope you enjoyed! I must admit I do love painting animals - much better than people! I am not the best at representing people in paint & I'll be the 1st to admit it. But if I am asked to - I do try my best!

To continue with the end of 2011...here is another custom order!

I was commissioned to paint a basic IKEA children's table for Xavier's 2nd birthday. The concept was open so I chose a universally popular (so I believe) theme of animals - specifically those found on safari & of course, included his name.

I chose to make the table top the feature and just continue some colour onto the sides and leave the legs white. I used semi-gloss Cotton Balls (Benjamin Moore) for the white base & gave all decoratively painted surfaces many, many coats of gloss top coat for protection.

Each time I do a furniture custom order - I enjoy it so much & want to do more! [ie: custom orders welcome :)]

I would have loved to document this table outdoors with sun shining & tall grasses surrounding...but it was November!

I couldn't resist doing each letter of his name to reflect each animal represented...

Last weekend I made Kai his November mobile - penguins wearing scarves! So cute! I made a template penguin first and then cut away to make 10 - each wearing a different coloured scarf. I have been having fun making these mobiles as its another creative outlet for me & I've been asked to make some more mobile pieces for a special new mom & her baby son! Already thinking of some great "themes" to create for them...

The mobile in baby K's room is a clip style (shown above) allowing for me to have a revolving art gallery of sorts for him to see while getting changed. He has enjoyed it so far; first up were black & white animal art cards and then some felt fruits & veggies a friend made. The art cards & veggies are now play toys so it was time for a new look along with the new season of fall that's upon us.

A couple weekends ago, I decided to make a fall/October themed mobile - some leaves, pumpkins & a bit of Halloween - a bat & a ghost. It took me about 10 minutes, as I just drew and cut out some basic shapes out of colourful card stock. He likes it which is always the most important thing! Here it is...

Already thinking about the next "theme". I don't want to follow along with retail (straight into Xmas after Halloween) so I think I will do some animals that like the snow! (then get into xmas in December! when it makes more sense)

I recently had the opportunity to create a painting for a housewarming gift. I think it was such a great idea to give custom artwork to celebrate a new home & much more meaningful than a plant or a bottle of wine!

The grey-blue painting includes the saying " Home is where the Heart is" in varying fonts, along with 2 silhouettes of vintage keys in the background.

Wonder where that saying came from? Well apparently it is from an inspirational poem

Recently I submitted my son's nursery design to HGTV's blog Style Sheet as they were focusing on Kid's Rooms in August. They put out a call to send in pics of nurseries & kid's rooms so I had to send mine in!

Well, his room was one of the rooms featured in the blog post which you can read here!

I am happy to say that 2 of tiny brushstrokes paintings are featured in that room (so far!) - an owl painting & one of my larger alphabet paintings.

I went to a friend's baby shower last weekend & made a special greeting card for her. I chose an owl for the motif as she has a subtle owl theme in the nursery and included purple as that is the colour of the feature wall in the space. I thought it was pretty cute!

Catching up from the summer months - I am a bad blogger - but aren't most?! It would be great to blog every day (or 2nd day for that matter) but life gets in the way! Which isn't a bad thing really :)

So back in May, I painted a custom order for an expecting mama who works for a cool radio station in Toronto. I have to say that this has been one of my favourite orders to date!

After seeing some of my paintings at Baby on the Hip, she wanted a custom series of 3 - 12" paintings that involved cows , to go with her colour scheme and that would be gender neutral as they weren't finding out the gender of their baby.

I came up with 3 ideas but secretly hoped she'd pick the Cow Rock Band idea which seemed to perfectly reflect her love of rock music & incorporate cute cows! We even decided to include one of her favourite band's (& mine!) logos on the drum kit. That's what I love about custom orders - getting to really personalize the design - after all, its all about the details!!

So when we bought our current home last winter, the soon to be nursery was a child's room with the ugliest mural I have ever seen! We saw beyond that "decor" and decided that it (along with other rooms in this house) would definitely make a dramatic before and after. After many, many coats of primer & paint - here are the pictures that follow this original nursery design post.

We are very happy with the results & baby Kai loves his room! The only thing left is to add some create - play - explore paintings above his crib wall & replace the nesting tables with a small 4 drawer dresser (to be painted white) for more clothes storage. The wardrobe in the closet nook on the other side of the door is packed! He has an extensive wardrobe for a 3 mo old!

As part of my decor concepts for little spaces, I thought I'd share my own for the nursery. To date it is not 100% complete, yet it is well on its way! I will update again once everything is in its place :)

CONCEPT: I wanted to create a playful, colourful & gender neutral space that our baby could grow up in - something not too "baby" and where additional colours could be added into down the road. I started with the colour scheme of aqua & white with an accent of orange.

PAINT: The paint colour is Shoreline by CIL, it is painted on the ceiling & the feature band around the room. A clean white finishes the rest of the walls & trim.

FLOORS: We had the existing hardwood floors stripped & re-stained to a bit darker finish to match the other upstairs rooms floors. We plan to add in an area rug at some point to make it softer in there for playtime later. I'm thinking either a solid or bold stripe.

WINDOW: We went with a faux wood white slat blind, to match the existing windows and give some darkness without complete darkness.

FURNITURE: Its hard to stay away from Ikea when their prices are so tough to beat! We went with the wood Leksvik convertible crib, Naturepedic Organic 2 in 1 crib mattress & contoured change pad from Baby on the Hip, & matching Leksvik change table, which coverts later into a dresser. As we were having closet issues in that room, we picked up a simple white wardrobe & billy bookcase for much needed storage.

Another piece of furniture that is arriving soon, is a painted white wood rocking chair from the 1800's that has been passed down in my family, newly outfitted with upholstered back & seat cushions. Along with a little rocking chair (that was mine as a child) to match! I love the fabric which is a teal colour and modern geometric pattern.

BEDDING: I went with fitted sheets & a matching sleep sac and stroller blanket from the Olli & Lime collection out of London. I choose Billie, which is a vibrant circular pattern in orange, white & a bit of brown. It was the perfect bedding as soon as I saw it!

ACCESSORIES: So far, only a few accessories have been added, with more to come! There are some orange storage boxes,

a wire mobile above the change table which holds Wee Gallery Black & White art cards. I envision this mobile as a rotating art gallery; for art cards, photos, drawings, little stuffies, etc.

a trio of paper poms in aqua, orange & poppy in the corner by the crib from Party Poms on etsy which add a burst of colour into the room,

some DIY aqua & white polka dot ribbon accented table lamps & a perfectly colour co-ordinated blabla, Socks the Fox.

ARTWORK: I am waiting to create paintings for this room once all the furniture is in place. I definately want to add a series of 3 paintings above the crib & a large modern orange alphabet painting somewhere. Along with a framed series of 3 black & white photographs including a belly pic, a baby pic & a new family of 3 pic.

THE ROOM: Here are some pics of the room so far - I'm very happy with the progress & can't wait to put the finishes touches (including the baby!) in it!

I've taken a bit of a break from the blog for the past month or so as I have been crazy busy! both with my personal life & with tiny brushstrokes...

A brief update: we've moved! from our downtown Toronto condo to a townhome in the Port Credit area of Mississauga. Everything will stay the same with tiny brushstrokes yet pick ups may be different as I am not in the city anymore.

One of the main reasons for our move is that we are expecting a little addition to our family early this February! which also means I am having so much fun with nursery design & of course, custom paintings for the room! I am sure pics of the nursery will make their way onto this blog and maybe some more interior design before & afters!

In the midst of the move was the Christmas One of a Kind show, which was a great show as usual. I have a feeling it is my last christmas One of a Kind show - but it has been a great 3 years overall!

Here are some shots of my booth set up this year - I rented hard walls which I think made a huge difference in my display.

My new series, Play-Create-Explore (shown above) did quite well with my customers and I am looking forward to making more - especially with the trike image (a favourite for most)!

I've been making more alphabet paintings for the upcoming OOAK show - as they are a contemporary, graphic element that can fit in within any decor. There will be more colour combos to come but I plan on using gender neutral colours with these paintings. Each painting measures 12" x 12" and retails for $95.

The black, red & white alphabet would be perfect in my black & white decor concept!

Also, I'm working on a new illustrated map painting. This one has a outer space theme which required some research on my part - as apparently Pluto is no longer considered a planet. Did you know that?

I have been trying out new looks for this blog & I think this is the one! I like the bold simplicity of it as it ties in a bit closer to my website.

I'm starting to work on new work for the upcoming One of a Kind Show! I am excited to be in the first 5 days this year and am hoping to entice my shoppers with new products and more of my illustrated maps!

Since the next show I participate in will be the OOAK - I think its long overdue that I post some pics from the Make It Show from early June! A little behind schedule but what can you do - its summer!

Although not the best photography, it does shows off my mini paintings, cards & coasters well enough. The little chalkboard sign is a new addition to my display and I used chalkboard marker (love!) on it which makes for easy writing but not easy removal as I discovered. A quick coat of chalkboard paint will remedy that for the next show.

Off to paint a new alphabet now!

update: I completed the painting especially created for the Canadian Feed the Children event & am happy with the result. It will be part of their auction so I am hoping that it will help to raise a lot of money for the charity and whoever gets it in the end will enjoy it! The painting is an illustrated map of sorts of our world, which is connected by children & a banner of positive words that (should) relate to any child, living in poverty or priviledge. what's new: I have been making new coasters & new greeting cards for the upcoming Make It show, which is this Saturday. I am happy to be part of an "adult" show, its different and nice to just be selling coasters & cards! My new style of greeting cards are all handmade, using wonderful decorative papers (a bit of recycling going on here) on bamboo, hemp & sugar cane cards. I love the bamboo cards, they are more of a bright white and so smooth! The designs are nature inspired; flowers, trees & (my favourite) butterflies! pics coming later this week...

I have been making more coasters in preparation for this upcoming show. It should be a fun day - cool to have a dj and a wide variety of vendors. Proceeds from the entry fee and raffle will be donated to the Furniture Bank Toronto.

Because this is more of an 'adult' show, I will only be selling coasters - looking forward to the simplicity of one product and making a cool display. I purchased a cut out designed piece of wood yesterday that I am going to make into a chalkboard sign to use at all shows, much easier to change the message that way.

I will be bringing more style coasters and some contemporary foliage designs - both which can suit in most decor. Come by and check out the show!

I am awaiting the arrival of a new book to add to my artbook shelf! The Pictorial Webster's: A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities!

I've been eyeing this book for a while, and an on-line coupon earned for answering a survey fulfilled the checkmark beside this book, (and I got it for a great deal too.)

Recently I was contacted by a representative for Canadian Feed the Children, a charity that "removes the barriers imposed by poverty, so a child struggling with hunger, illness or isolation can know health, well-being and a childhood without fear." They work in countries around the world including Canada, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, Sierra Leone & Uganda.

They are holding a fundraiser this June at the Bata Shoe Museum (Toronto) and were seeking donations. Of couse I said yes as it seemed like a great fit for WHDesigns. Because the majority of my work is artwork for children, I aim to donate to charities that benefit children, such as my donation to Unicef last fall and now this.

I have decided to paint an illustrated map of sorts, on a 24" x 24" canvas. The map is of our world, which is connected by children & a banner of positive words that (should) relate to any child, living in poverty or priviledge. I have almost completed the painting and look forward to sharing it here and at the fundraiser. So far it is looking great!

The exciting part is that it is going to be in their auction! I hope that it will raise a lot of money for Canadian Feed the Children.

The following painting is now in a new home, a bedroom for 2 little boys. I thought I'd put together a little decor concept for ideas on how to decorate around it. Purely for inspiration - and not too much on a "pirate theme", this would make a stylish boys room with a focus on adventure!

The bloomin' earth show last weekend in Kitchener was wonderful! We had nice weather (although a bit windy for my painting stand at one point - disaster averted!) - but great work by organizer Megan of Remakeable for a successful event. I am heading out today for the bloomin' earth show - it will be my first outdoor show! So far the forcast is looking good - fingers crossed. I will be handing out my Earth Day colouring page as a freebie and holding a draw throughout the day to win a Happy Birthday banner in custom colours. alice in wonderland

I saw Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland over the weekend and thought it was so great! Very visually creative and I enjoyed how he revisited this imaginative place with a new story that still referenced the original. I recommend seeing it - especially in 3-D. I loved Alice's many dresses throughout the movie - especially the one she wore while posing as "Um" with the Red Queen. I have been re-reading the original as I want to create a map painting inspired by this story for quite a while now. There are so many little details that could be included in the painting - should be a fun one! Stay tuned...

Here are a couple new paintings & paper banners to share that I have been working on lately. First up, an alphabet painting. I like the clean style of this design - would look great in any colour combo and on a larger canvas. This one is a 12" x 12", but would look great on a 20" x 20" canvas.

Next up is a little portrait style painting for a 2 year old girl. She now has a little sister who was included in this year's birthday painting. She receives one each year from a special person in her life. Someday, she will have a cute little series! This painting was painted from a photo of her leaning in to give her little sis a kiss.

Also, I made 2 custom paper banners for a twin boy & girl's birthday. Colours requested were: bright pink, purple, green and butterflies for her and blue, green & red for him. I think they look great and hope they will add a bit of fun into their rooms!

The final new item: colouring book style stickers to go along with my A-Z Organically book set. I made a sample and although they need some "grown-up" help with cutting the stickers out, I think they would be a fun addition to the book. Kids can colour them and use them in their own drawings. What do you think?

Well, it's no surprise that the woodland animals won the most votes in my poll - I'm looking forward to starting this map painting starring a deer, bunny, owl, squirrel, etc. I have some sketches ready and a title 'wandering through the woods'.

I love this colour combination - its so fresh! I envision it with white walls and a warm hardwood floor. This concept is for a nursery but could easily be transformed into a toddler room using the same colour palette. I am introducing a new feature to the blog which will utilize my love of interior design by putting together little design schemes for kids rooms based on my paintings. Alongside my artwork, I will incorporate bedding, furniture, paint colour, accessories, toys, etc. to create a general concept that is longlasting and not too 'baby'. recycled crayons

If you are ever looking for an easy kid-friendly project, try making some recycled crayons! It's a fun way to bring new life to old broken crayons. A creative project which makes the perfect size crayon discs for little hands. Or a fun and inexpensive addition to birthday party loot bags by making your own little sets personalized for each party goer!

What you need:

- a lot of broken crayons without their paper coverings

- an old muffin tin

- preheated oven to 250

What to do:

- break crayons down into smaller pieces

- assemble into muffin tins (tip: fill each space to the top for thick crayons)

* you can put similar colours together or mix the colours up for multi-coloured crayons

- melt crayons in the oven for about 15 min

- take out to cool (to speed up cooling process, put in the freezer for a couple minutes)

Yay - now you have your own recycled crayons - so fun! I packaged mine in wax paper + ribbon and added a label which can be customized for that added touch.

Recently, I had the opportunity to create a series of 4 out of one of my paintings which was purchased at the Christmas OOAK. I really enjoyed the process & am so happy the paintings were well received!

The original painting that inspired the series is the airplane silhouette. To co-ordinate with the additional 3 paintings, I chose to repeat the striped border around each canvas. I included an additional silhouette image (rocket ship) along with 2 other playful images which were favourites of my clients! The 4 paintings can be displayed in a variety of ways, horizontally, vertically, in a square formation, diagonally, etc.

The front + back cover can also be coloured and inside there is a page to colour & a page to draw for each letter. The front + back covers have a thicker card stock and the book is held together with a durable binding. Here are a couple shots of it...

Paper Banners

One of my new projects to introduce for 2010 is my Paper Banners. They will be available in 3' & 6' lengths and are constructed using a variety of cardstock papers + white ribbon. They are a colourful and easy way to decorate a room that can be installed using 2 clear tacks (provided) or tied between 2 pieces of furniture if applicable. When installing with the tacks, the extra ribbon can be wrapped around the tack for a more streamlined look or left hanging down for a more casual look.

Shown below is a 6' paper banner I created as a gift for my sister this past christmas. It is hung above her queen size bed. Enjoy!
