Lisa Crispo Photography - September 2013 - Portraits of Home Made

Welcome to the 7th edition of Portraits of Home Made! This month`s creative mom is a photographer who has been in business for 19 years, can name George Bush Jr. as one of her portrait subjects & and loves working from home so she can be there for her kids!

Lisa Crispo strives to take photos with meaning and purpose. I had the pleasure of chatting with Lisa about her work and her passion for capturing your special moments is evident in her elegant photographs and thoughtful approach to each photo session.

Lisa Crispo is a professional photographer who specializes in capturing your cherished moments through her business Lisa Crispo Photography. She is mom to 10 year old Francesca and 8 year old Luca and lives in Caledon, Ontario.

Q: In 3 words, describe your business.

A: Meaningful, Beautiful & Fun

Q: Did you start your business before or after becoming a mom? If after, how did having children affect your business?

A: I started my business before I had children, in fact before I was even married.

I had an actual studio space and managed well with Francesca however after Luca arrived it changed everything. Juggling a two year old, a newborn baby and a business was crazy! I decided to give up my location and move my studio home. When I moved my business to my home I also decided to temporarily make it a part time thing. Once Luca was in school full time I was able to pick things up and build it to a full time business again.

Q: Mixing business and motherhood can be a balancing act! What is your approach to making it through the day accomplishing growth in your business alongside nurturing your little ones?

A: Staying focused and organized! A big white board helps me with my to do list. Having a good routine to balance home and business life is essential. I can stop working once the kids are home from school so I can help them with homework, get dinner ready or drive them to training. It's important my kids eat properly so I really have to plan ahead with meals on training nights.

Q: What do you consider the biggest perk to having your business in your home? What is the biggest challenge?

A: The biggest perk is being able to make my own hours and booking portrait sessions around my children's activities.

The biggest challenge is trying to do my work while the kids are home and hoping they do not interrupt a telephone conversation with my clients. Both of my children do sports and I love to be able to go and see them especially when Francesca has a gymnastic competition or when Luca has a baseball tournament but sometimes it doesn't work out because of previous commitments. I love my family however my trust and relationship with my clients means a lot to me too.

Q: What is your favourite social media platform to share and connect with your customers and why?

A: I love Instagram because it gives me the opportunity to express myself and just photograph something for the sake of wanting to capture a moment. Facebook and my blog are great too because they allow me to keep my clients up to date with what I'm doing.

Q: If you could add another element/extension to your business, what would it be?

A: It would be to include film photography alongside digital photography which I am currently incorporating in my new creative photo shoot concept entitled The Birthday Slice.

I had a huge 1st birthday party for both of my children and it was a little hard because I was so busy trying to prepare the food, organize the entertainment, all while making sure that every one was having a good time. I feel like I missed most of it and I was there the whole time. As parents and hosts, we really never do get to enjoy the special moments of our children’s first birthday party.

It’s your baby’s first birthday and I’m sure you have been planning all year for this special day. What a milestone it is! During the 1st birthday party, parents are normally consumed with guests and miss the special moment of their little one blowing out the candle on their 1st birthday cake.

I developed a new concept that captures and celebrates the enjoyment of that private moment, of baby turning 1 year old. The Birthday Slice is a private birthday party photo session with the child, their parents and any siblings. In contrast to the cake smash trend which can be messy, The Birthday Slice is a simple, elegant and beautiful way to capture the 1st birthday!

Q: Please name any Canadian artisan you would like to collaborate with (if anything was possible) on a product/project.

A: I recently had the chance to work with Pink Lemon Bakeshop from Woodbridge, ON who supplied the delicious lemon raspberry cake for the recent Birthday Slice photo session.

Q: If you had an unexpected afternoon of free time, how would you spend it?

A: Swimming - with the kids of course!

Q: Is there a creative skill you wish you had?

A: I would like to be able to paint.

Quick 3:

1. Coffee or Tea?

Coffee.

2. Music, Movies or Podcasts while you work?

Music.

3. Name a book that has inspired/informed your business?

I get inspired visually through other photographers work.

Q: What is your favourite location for a photo shoot?

A: My favourite location is on a beach; I recently did a photo shoot with 2 little girls in light white dresses at Cherry Beach - it was a beautiful dreamy scene!

Thank you Lisa for sharing your beautiful photography! I asked Lisa to share with us a couple tips that she gives to her clients before their photo shoot to ensure they have a great session.

* Fashion plays a major role in a good photo; you want to plan your wardrobe so that it is classic and not trendy so it won't look dated a few years from now. For example in a family photo, everyone should be co-ordinated but not matching (resist the white shirts and jeans!) and consider a complimentary colour scheme.

* Consider getting your hair and make up done professionally for the photo shoot and moisturize that beautiful newborn to ensure their soft skin looks its best when capturing their first portrait.

"A photograph is a way of holding onto cherished moments.
Moments in life we would love to relive."
